Institute of Archaeology, Belgrade, Serbia

Within the scope of the Project, the Institute of Archaeology wishes to obtain the aerial photographs and DTM images of some of the most important archeological sites in Serbia and to keep them as strategic documents for various scientific analyses. First of all, we would like to get the DTM of Margum, an important Roman town and Early Mediaeval bishopric seat at the confluence of the Morava with the Danube, and of Caričin Grad, most probably the city of Justiniana Prima founded by Emperor Justinian I in the sixth century.

The photographs and DTM images will be used and published by our researchers in Prehisorian, Roman, Medieval and Landscape archaeology. Since the budget got reduced we have slightly chanded our initial plans, so that the most important sites, such as Roman town Margum at the confluence with the Danube river, are going to be scanned first.

Secondly, we would like to learn of the existing archives of aerial photographs in our country.

Responsible persons for the Institute of Archaeology within the Project are Vujadin Ivanišević and Ivan Bugarski.

History

The Institute of Archaeology was founded on June 4th 1947 in Belgrade as a part of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and from the very beginning it was the most prominent archaeological institution in Serbia. The Institute conducts systematic research, valorization and presentation of archaeological sites and findings. The associates of the Institute deal with various topics, ranging from the Palaeolithic to the Turkish periods. In research of the most important archaeological sites in our country the Institute works closely with some other institutions in Serbia and from abroad. We would like to point out our partnerships with the Centre National de Recherches Scientifiques - France, Ecole Française de Rome, Römisch-Germanische Kommission in Frankfurt, Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum - Forschungsinstitut für Vor- und Frühgeschichte in Mainz, and many others.

Publications

During the last couple of years the Institute published more than a few books, some in cooperation with other institutions, and volumes of the Starinar periodical, the best known archaeological publication from Serbia founded in 1884 by the Serbian Archaeological Society. Starinar appears annually.

Further Activities and Projects

The main activities of the Institute are conducted with the support of the Ministry of Science of the Republic of Serbia through four major, long-lasting scientific projects covering Prehistory, Antiquity and Middle Ages, as follows:

• Archaeology of Serbia: Cultural Identity, Integrative Factors, Technological Processes and the Role of the Central Balkans in Development of Prehistory in Europe (2011-2015)
• Romanization, Urbanization and Transformation of Urban Centers of the Civil, Military, and Residential Character in Roman Provinces in the Territory of Present-Day Serbia (2011-2015
• Processes of Urbanization and Development of Mediaeval Society (2011-2015)
• IRS – Viminacium, Roman Town and Legionary Camp: Research of Material and Spiritual Culture and Population through the Aplication of Modern Technologies of Long-Range Detection, Geophysics, GIS, Digitalization, and 3D Visualization (2011-2015)
