The University of Klaipėda, established in 1991, is the youngest university in Lithuania. With three faculties and 2,500 students in its first academic year, it has since grown to seven faculties and several research institutes with a student body of ca. 10 000 students and 600 persons in educational staff.

The Institute of Baltic Sea Region History and Archaeology (Lithuanian abbreviation BRIAI) having a research staff of 15 persons is a scientific subdivision of Klaipėda University. The institute was established in 2003 on the basis of former Centre of History of Western Lithuania and Prussia (functioned since 1992). Since 2009 institute is located in a one of the buildings of former military garnison situated at the University campus. There are working rooms for research stuff, a lecture room and library containing ca. 26 000 volumes of historical and archaeological literature.

BRIAI is recognized nationally and internationally for its research dealing with medieval and early modern history, prehistoric, historic and underwater archaeology and cultural anthropology in the context of Baltic Sea region. The results of research of the scientific personal are presented in the the scientific series of the institute  Acta Historica Universitatis Klaipedensis and Archaeologia Baltica.  The institute collaborate with scientific institutions and museums from Lithuania, Germany, Poland, Russia, Latvia, Estonia, Finlans, Sweden, Denmark, UK and USA.

The research staff of institute through a tight connection with a Chair of History at the Faculty of Humanities is involved in to the study process. There are 134 students who were chosen undergraduate and 23 graduate study programs in history and archaeology at the moment.

A new MA study program on landscape archaeology was launched starting September 2010.  Aim of the study program is to introduce students to the origin and formation of regional cultural landscapes in the context of European landscape archaeology, paying attention to modern scientific information, innovative and non-destructive methods/ technologies and recent theoretical ideas.
