The Maison des Sciences de l'Homme et de l'Environnement Claude NicolasLedoux at the Université de Franche-Comté (MSHE Ledoux) is an USR of the CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research). This interdisciplinary researchinstitute gathers together research teams in the Humanities, Modern Languages and Social Sciences. Key research themes include sustainable development, urban and rural planning, and long-term human-environment interactions. Many researchers in the institute make use of spatial techniques and approaches.

Archaeologists within the MSHE Ledoux have a tradition of conducting research at the landscape, regional and supra-regional scales, incorporating the use of GIS, aerial photography and other remote sensing methods into their work. In the 1980s and 1990s G. Chouquer and F. Favory used aerial photography in their study of the Roman cadastres in France. Beginning in the 1990s MSHE Ledoux researchers including F. Favory, L. Nuninger, F.P.Tourneux and E. Fovet participated in the ArchaeoMedes and ArchaeDynprojects studying natural and anthropogenic causes of soil degradation and desertification in the Mediterranean basin and analysing the evolution of settlement patterns from Antiquity to the Middle Ages. In 2008 L. Nuninger, C.Laplaige, C. Fruchart and R. Opitz participated in the LIEPPEC project, using airborne lidar to study the landscapes around Besançon and Mandeure-Mathay(ancient Epomanduodurum) in the Franche-Comté.

Researchers at the MSHE Ledoux have collaborated with researchers from the IAPS SAZU on a number of projects, notably through the ModeLTERlaboratory.
