English Heritage
English Heritage is the United Kingdom government's statutory adviser on the historic environment in England. Officially known as the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England, English Heritage is an Executive Non-departmental Public Body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).
English Heritage works in partnership with the central government departments, local authorities, voluntary bodies and the private sector to:
- Conserve and enhance the historic environment
- Broaden public access to the heritage
- Increase people's understanding of the past

English Heritage's involvement in ArcLand is led by Aerial Investigation and Mapping(AIM), part of the Remote Sensing team, based within the Heritage Protection Department that has a key role in the development and implementation of the National Heritage Protection Plan (NHPP).
The AIM team is responsible for the National Mapping Programme (NMP), which English Heritage has continued to support through its own staff and through grant aid to partner bodies. The aim of NMP is to enhance the understanding of past human settlement, by providing primary information and synthesis for all archaeological sites and landscapes visible on aerial photographs or other airborne remote sensed data. By March 2011, 43.1% of England had been covered and 15 projects were in progress. A Strategy for the National Mapping Programme was published in 2009, providing a basis for the next 5 years' work.
Our long running aerial reconnaissance programme continues strongly with 280 hours of flying programmed each year. Over the last two years more than 4000 targets have been photographed, including the monitoring of over 1500 designated sites and the discovery of several hundred previously unrecorded sites.
English Heritage was an early adopter of lidar data for archaeological remote sensing and over the last two years work has focused on moving from a research stage to an implementation stage. Guidelines on the archaeological use of lidar have been published as The Light Fantastic, available as a PDF file or in hard copy by contacting the AerSI team.
We continue to disseminate the exciting results of aerial survey work in England at all levels, each year providing teaching at several universities, training for local interest groups and displays for popular events such as the annual Festival of History.
Since the completion of the Culture 2000 European Landscapes project in 2007, English Heritage has also continued informal liaison with all groups across the twelve countries represented in that project.
Archives/Collections
The National Monuments Record (NMR) is one of the largest publicly accessible archives in the UK and the largest one dedicated to the historic environment. We hold over 10 million photos, plans, drawings, reports and publications on architecture, archaeology, listed buildings, aerial photography and social history.
