The CMA was formed in 1999, jointly funded by the University of Ulster and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA). The CMA has established an inter-disciplinary research environment, interacting equally with the sciences and humanities. Since inception, we have been active in developing discrete areas of coastal-, freshwater- and historical archaeology and marine geoarchaeology with specialized experience in marine and freshwater remote sensing and an expanding interest in GI technologies and the applications of LiDAR for archaeological studies. We enjoy close collaboration with cognate ESRI Research Groups and with archaeology and earth science departments in Europe, North America and Africa. CMA research is structured under the broad theme of maritime cultural landscapes - extending from riverine and lacustrine environments to the open ocean, with primary emphasis on coastal and nearshore archaeology.
