Erasmus IP. Summer School "'Preventive Archaeology'

postdateiconmaandag 10 juni 2013 08:00 | postauthoriconGeschreven door Federica Boschi | PDF | Afdrukken | E-mailadres

Erasmus IP. Summer School "'Preventive Archaeology' - Urban sites and landscapes. Methods and techniques for evaluating the archaeological value"

Ravenna, 1-12 July 2013

organized by: University of Bologna, Dipartimento di Storia Culture Civiltà, Sezione di Archeologia

The international Summer School "'Preventive Archaeology'. Urban sites and landscapes. Methods and techniques for evaluating the archaeological value" is a short-term specialization school which aims to form graduates and PhD students on preventive archaeology, topic with great actuality in Europe. It is a theme of interdisciplinary relevance, aimed to promote the protection of the archaeological heritage as well as the urban development and the spatial planning, involving many different disciplines and several aspects of the working activities in urban or extra-urban contexts.

The school is addressed to a maximum of 30 graduates and PhD students coming from Italy and from the Erasmus IP partners countries.

The course is articulated in theoretical lectures, by teachers and experts of international provenance, and assisted applications on the field and in laboratory, during which the participants will have the opportunity to test advanced methods and instruments of aerial, topographical, geophysical survey and of diagnostic for archaeology, all systems increasingly used in each preliminary approach to archaeological issues. The school will take place in Ravenna and in the archaeological site of Classe, the famous late roman port for commercial trade.

The lectures will focus on the main topics covered: methods and diagnostic for archaeology, landscape archaeology and urban archaeology, aerial photography and remote sensing, geophysics and photogrammetry for archaeology. Particular attention will be also paid to the legislative aspects in matter of preventive archaeology (with the involvement of the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici dell’Emilia Romagna), to the GIS and data management systems, and to the presentation of several cases history.

The practical experiences (geomatic and geophysics) will be held in urban and extra-urban contexts: in Ravenna and in the archaeological area of Classe.

The participation of teachers and specialists from different European universities and International Companies, as well as the use of advanced technologies will allow students to:

1) acquire a deep multidisciplinary knowledge on the issues covered;

2) obtaining the most important methodologies in the evaluation of archaeological potential;

3) improving the interaction between students and teachers, and facilitating the possibility of international collaborations.

EU has accepted 7 new Associated Partners

postdateiconvrijdag 07 juni 2013 10:47 | postauthoriconGeschreven door Axel Posluschny | PDF | Afdrukken | E-mailadres

The EU has accepted 7 new Associated Partners to widen ArcLand's network!

- Balla Secondary School (Co. Mayo, Ireland) has carried out a very interesting project together with Kevin Barton (Landscape & Geophysical Services) for 15-16 year old students which might even have a wider impact on second level teaching in Ireland. We hope to further support projects that get us (i.e. Archaeologists in general and ArcLand in particular) in touch with enthusiastic non-archaeologists like the group from Balla.

- The West Lothian Archaeological Trust (WLAT) in Scotland is heavily involved in Kite Photography for archaeology and we can learn a lot from John Wells' and his group.

- Dublin City Council has hosted the ArcLand conference "From Known Knowns to Unknown Unknowns" and is still hosting our exhibition "Traces of the Past". Their valuable support has provided ArcLand an improved communication with the wider public.

- The Department of Applied and Environmental Geophysics, Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Comenius University (Bratislava/Slovak Republic) will be involved in our networking activities and the exchange of expertise. They are focussing on the application of near surface geophysical methods in archaeological prospecting - namely potential fields methods and GPR.

- The Department of Classical Studies and Art, Art History, and Visual Studies at Duke University (Durham/USA) will be our hub across the ocean to broaden our network and to get in touch with things that are going on in the USA.

- The Institute for Archaeological Sciences of the Bern University/CH is (finally) our connection point in Switzerland and is engaged in developing new means for the transfer of knowledge for a broader public as well as in the empowerment of new generations of junior scientist. In addition to the classic techniques of archaeological excavations and surface surveys the institute applies extensive geophysical prospection work in combination with the interpretation of both optical and radar spaceborne remote sensing data.

- The EU funded project ARIADNE is dealing with topics of data infrastructure and will be our collaboration partner for these kind of questions.

More information will be available hopefully soon on the ArcLand website's partner section.

We are looking forward to a fruitful and intense collaboration with our new partners and are looking forward to meeting them on our workshops, field schools, conferences, sessions, plenary and WP meetings or alongside any other events!

Call for Papers and Posters CAA2013 PERTH - Across Space and Time

Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology Perth, Western Australia 25-28th March 2013

The CAA2013 PERTH conference 'Across Space and Time' will be held at the University Club of Western Australia from Tuesday 26 – Thursday 28 March 2013. Workshops will be held on Monday 25 March on the UWA campus.

CAA (Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology) is the premier international conference for all aspects of computing, quantitative methods and digital applications in Archaeology. With a history going back to 1972, CAA encourages participation from scholars, specialists and experts in the fields of archaeology, history, cultural heritage, digital scholarship, GIS, mathematics, semantic web, informatics and members of other disciplines that complement and extend the interests of CAA. For further information about this exciting interdisciplinary conference see the website http://caa2013.org.

Call for Papers and Posters

The CAA 2013 Organising Committee invites proposals for papers and posters relating to all aspects of computer applications, quantitative methods and digital applications in Archaeology and Cultural Heritage. Paper and Poster proposals are due by 10th October 2012 (UTC).

Conference sessions

The conference will be comprised of over 40 sessions and workshops. The main themes of the conference include the following:

  • Field and laboratory data recording
  • Data management, analysis and the semantic web
  • 3D modelling, visualisation and simulations
  • Spatio-temporal modelling and GIS
  • Remote sensing (long and short range)
  • Users and interfaces: multimedia, museums and education
  • Cultural heritage management and interpretation.

Papers which do not fit within any of the specified sessions may be submitted to the General Session and may be reassigned by the Review Committee as appropriate. The list of proposed sessions and workshop is available online: http://www.caa2013.org/CAA2013sessions.pdf

Formats

The CAA 2013 Conference will include several formats for the delivery of content, including the following:

  • Long paper sessions (LP): A conventional format session of related 20 minute papers with 10 minute question time. Papers should present new and ground-breaking research.
  • Focus sessions (FS): A session consisting of thematically-related 5 minute key-point presentations, an optional discussant to pull the theme together, followed by a room-based breakout organised around posters or demos presenting additional information to maximise networking. Note: Focus Session papers are not ‘short papers’, they are regarded as full papers.
  • Roundtables: A panel addressing a specific topic or issue, coordinated by one or more individuals. Presentations of the speakers will normally be followed by a discussant and general discussion.
  • Posters: A poster session will provide an opportunity for preliminary work to be presented and discussed directly with the presenter.

All research presented at CAA2013, regardless of the delivery format, may be submitted after the conference for publication in the peer reviewed conference proceedings.

Workshops

The conference will include a number of half and full day pre-conference workshops. Workshops will generally include practical work or other active participation of attendees.

How to Submit

Please submit your proposal via the CAA Open Conference System at https://caaconference.org/ocs. The CAA Open Conference Systems (OCS) submission tool will receive submissions starting the 21st August 2012 (UTC).
