University of Vienna, Austria

postdateiconThursday, 24 March 2011 12:00 | PDF | Print | E-mail

The University of Vienna is associated partner of ArcLand represented by the aerial archaeology section (Aerial Archive - http://luftbildarchiv.univie.ac.at/) of the Department for Prehistoric and Medieval Archaeology (Institut für Ur- und Frühgeschichte - http://ufg.univie.ac.at/).

The Aerial Archive is specialized in aerial archaeology, airborne laser scanning (LiDAR) and airborne hyperspectral scanning and has focused one line of research and teaching strategies on archaeological prospection and landscape archaeology. The Aerial Archive stores vertical and oblique photographs as well as an extended digital archive including orthophotos, digital terrain models and archaeological interpretation data. It was integrated into the Department for Prehistoric and Medieval Archaeology in 1979. Thus, the department is one of the few institutions worldwide where aerial archaeology takes place within a university setting. Its responsibilities range from the production and archiving of aerial photographs, to their archaeological interpretation, up to their photogrammetric mapping of the relevant findings. The recent research programs were based on the archaeological application of airborne laser scanning and aerial archaeology.
