The Rathcroghan Visitor Centre, Ireland

postdateiconFriday, 23 December 2011 11:36 | PDF | Print | E-mail

The Rathcroghan Visitor Centre, located in Tulsk, Co. Roscommon, Ireland is a community run and developed project aimed at promoting the archaeological regions of Tulsk, Carnfree and Rathcroghan. These three regions are located within the central expanse of Co. Roscommon and form a Ritual/Royal centre for Connacht in the West of Ireland.

The Centre and its parent board the Tulsk Action Group Ltd have played an important role developing relationships between archaeologists and the local community in the area. The region covered by the centre has largely been untouched by excavation and we have been involved in some important Remote Sensing projects such as the ArchaeoGeophysical Imaging Project (NUIG) and (LGS), The Medieval Rural Settlement Project (Discovery Programme).

Rathcroghan Visitor Centre is currently expanding our involvement with archaeological groups and seeking to developed a wider community understanding of the importance of modern surveying and remote sensing techniques through professionally guided tours of the monuments and hands on workshops.

Thanks to John Well of the West Lothian Archaeolical Trust, for providing a Kite Aerial Photography Kit, which we will be using in upcoming community and school projects.

2013 - Rathcroghan Legacy Project

This project aims to promote and develop the links between archaeology and the community. A number of individual projects are being developed under this title including:

12 month lecture series starting in January 2013

24th August 2013 - Kite Aerial Photography Demonstration presented by Kevin Barton (LGS), and Geophysical Result Presentations by Joe Fenwick (NUIG Dept. of Archaeology) and Shane Rooney (NUIG Earth and Ocean Science)
