Intensive introduction to essential aspects of aerial archeology.
The program, which will make use of practical exercises and group discussions as well as formal teaching, will aim to present aerial archeology as a process consisting of airborne reconnaissance, photography, interpretation, rectification of oblique air photographs, drawing and mapping of archaeological sites and features, and related topics. The language of the course will be English.
The work will be divided into two parts.
A "ground school" covering the basic principles of aerial survey and air photography along with the essential processes of interpretation and mapping of the collected imagery for use in archaeological recording, excavation, conservation and public education etc.
An "air school", based at a nearby airfield, aimed at providing first-hand experience in aerial reconnaissance and aerial photography.
Archaeology students and practicing archaeologists from countries bordering the Baltic Sea: Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Greenland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Poland, Germany and the Netherlands.

Costs:
400€ for ground-based teaching, flying, accommodation (two per bedroom), food (not drinks) and local transport. Please note, that applications will be assessed although they are sent later than 3 months before the start of the training school. The deadline for grant applications is 16 May 2011.
